Rock Crystal

The rock crystal is a variety of quartz.

Its significance lies in the fact that it can strengthen the energies of other healing stones. Its name comes from the Greek "krystallos", which means "ice", which is due to the fact that it was considered in antiquity for petrified ice, which was no longer to melt. Rock crystals are used from a spiritual, religious and shamanic age and are supposed to release negative energies. It has been given great importance in ancient cultures, such as Aboriginal, Mayan, Celts, Tibetan Buddhists and many more. Even today he is considered one of the most important healing stones. So today the rock crystal is regarded in many places as a symbol of perfection and was formerly called in German-speaking counter-stone "Schwindelstein", because it was believed that by his possession a dizziness could be cured.

The meaning of the Bergkristalls is often called in connection with Goethe. Because this has dealt extensively with the mineral.

There is therefore a monument in the Czech Republic which shows the poet-prince holding a rock crystal in his hands.

The occurrence of the mountain crystal

The rock crystal occurs worldwide, including frequently in Switzerland and China, Austria and India, Mexico, Russia, the United States and Madagascar and Arkansas, just to name a few.

The world's largest mining is in Brazil, where the most abundant and abundant deposits are found.

Also in Germany there is the rock crystal, especially in the Alps and the Fichtelgebirge.

Origin of the mountain crystal

The crystalline quartz in a particularly pure form forms hydrothermally when alumina-free silica cools and crystallizes.

There are perfectly pure rock crystals that contain no other minerals. It is considered particularly important that its forms are very different. It has also been found that the developmental phases can last for thousands of years. The different forming forms have different names, such as scepter quartz, babylon quartz or filament quartz. If the rock crystal has inclusions, there are other names for it, such as rutile quartz, actinolite quartz or sand quartz.

Early evidence of the stone comes from the Middle Palaeolithic. A hand-ax made of rock crystal was found in South Moravia. Moreover, artifacts from the Mesolithic occur again and again. Particularly large finds of used rock crystals were in the Jochtal at the main Alpine ridge, where about half of the found inventory was made of this stone.

The ideal place for the formation of mountain crystals are caves and windy peaks of mountains.

Properties of the mountain crystal

The properties of the rock crystal are manifold.

Striking is its white to transparent color. It is a crystal quartz of oxides and has a glassy shine. It can occur in the form of masses, drusen and grains, as well as in prismatic and hexagonal crystals. The rock crystal is considered the unadulterated form of quartz, which makes the distinction of other varieties possible. The line color is also here - as with many gems - white. The stone can not be split or only inadequately, so the break is considered musselig and brittle. It has a hardness of 7, which indicates a high hardness on the scale reaching to 10 points.

The rock crystal can be dissolved in hydrofluoric acid. When heated to over 300 degrees, the mineral changes color; this being undone by x-rays.

When irradiated with radium, the stone becomes smoky.
