The image-producing psyche "sets us in the picture" about inner states, motives and events, thus expanding the experience of the human being through the experience of symbols and giving hints for the understanding of ourself and the world.
Symbols have an effect on thinking and feeling, on perception, imagination and intuition, they connect the conscious and the unconscious. Human awareness took place and takes place through the medium of symbolism.
Every sign, every mode of behavior, every human activity which by its very nature refers to another, gains symbolic value. A symbol is therefore a symbol; it arises when an external object is brought together with a spiritual content and meaning.
This ability to give meaning to the world and its things is the specific human capacity for symbolization.
